Ok... I don't know if we are all this happy about the snow, but while we are getting used to it, here is a quick update from last week, when there was no snow. :)
As we are getting used to our new combined class, we are becoming more and more like a small family :). I am very excited to learn more about each and every one of my students every day.
This week in Grade 5 Math,
we continued working with numbers up to 1,000,000. We looked at different ways to represent numbers and have also started doing more operations with these large numbers. Next week we will continue working with numbers and soon we will be transitioning into patterns. This week, the grade 5s also completed a standardized math test (MIPI) which all students, at their grade level have taken or will take, to see how much they remember from the math they learned in the previous year. This allows teachers to know what topics will need some extra time and effort. This is NOT a test that will be used towards the students' final grade. The questions and results will be distributed on Monday.
Every other day, we continue to do a challenging math question as well, with both grades. These allow us to think outside the box.
In Grade 5 Science,
we continued to work on our
small project where we would look at a favourite place to visit and what
the weather would be like there at various times of the year. These projects are due Monday as we will start the presentations on Tuesday.
In Religion we are working through the first chapter with the Grade 5s as the Grade 6s did independent work on their first Chapter in their book. They also have a Google Form test posted on their Google Classroom accounts to check their understanding.
In French we set up accounts with Duolingo. These allow us to practice our French skills online, either in class or at home. I will be assigning assignments through this tool as well. This is a great tool as students can not only hear how to pronounce French words but can review their past learnings and practice speaking themselves.
In English Language Arts finished our Book Reviews on one of our favourite books. These will be made available on our Blog under Favourite Books. We also started doing weekly spelling tests. The first test results will be available Monday. A new set of words will be provided also on Monday. The students need to work on the worksheets with those words until Friday at which time we write the tests.
In Social Studies, we started exploring Elections and the Canadian Government with the Grade 6 students. The Federal Elections just around the corner (Oct. 21), we have a lot of work to do to be ready :).
Finally, we took some time to briefly visit the Learning Commons (Library). Regular visits will be on Day 3s for us.
