Ok... I don't know if we are all this happy about the snow, but while we are getting used to it, here is a quick update from last week, when there was no snow. :)

As we are getting used to our new combined class, we are becoming more and more like a small family :).  I am very excited to learn more about each and every one of my students every day.

This week in Grade 5 Math, we continued working with numbers up to 1,000,000.  We looked at different ways to represent numbers and have also started doing more operations with these large numbers.  Next week we will continue working with numbers and soon we will be transitioning into patterns.  This week, the grade 5s also completed a standardized math test (MIPI) which all students, at their grade level have taken or will take, to see how much they remember from the math they learned in the previous year.  This allows teachers to know what topics will need some extra time and effort.  This is NOT a test that will be used towards the students' final grade.  The questions and results will be distributed on Monday.

Every other day, we continue to do a challenging math question as well, with both grades. These allow us to think outside the box.

In Grade 5 Science, we continued to work on our small project where we would look at a favourite place to visit and what the weather would be like there at various times of the year.  These projects are due Monday as we will start the presentations on Tuesday.

In Religion we are working through the first chapter with the Grade 5s as the Grade 6s did independent work on their first Chapter in their book.  They also have a Google Form test posted on their Google Classroom accounts to check their understanding.

In French we set up accounts with Duolingo.  These allow us to practice our French skills online, either in class or at home.  I will be assigning assignments through this tool as well.  This is a great tool as students can not only hear how to pronounce French words but can review their past learnings and practice speaking themselves.

In English Language Arts finished our Book Reviews on one of our favourite books.  These will be made available on our Blog under Favourite Books. We also started doing weekly spelling tests.  The first test results will be available Monday.  A new set of words will be provided also on Monday.  The students need to work on the worksheets with those words until Friday at which time we write the tests.

In  Social Studies, we started exploring Elections and the Canadian Government with the Grade 6 students.  The Federal Elections just around the corner (Oct. 21), we have a lot of work to do to be ready :).

Finally, we took some time to briefly visit the Learning Commons (Library). Regular visits will be on Day 3s for us.

Welcome from Mrs. Kiss - Sept 20, 2019

Welcome to the Grade 6/5 Combined Class.

Bring a smile and your curiosity and we will achieve great things together!!!

These past few days we not only got to know each other a little better but we also started working on many subjects.

In Grade 5 Math, we looked at Numbers including numbers up to 1,000,000.  We also did our first quiz on multiplication facts.  This quiz was intended to show me where everyone stands and then we will build speed and accuracy over the following months.

As a morning activity, with both grades, we also worked on a complex math problem that required a little bit of "outside of the box" thinking.  We will be doing these at least twice a week.

In Grade 5 Science, we continued to track the weather in Calgary, as started with the other teachers.  We also discussed weather sayings and finally, we started a small project where we would look at a favourite place to visit and what the weather would be like there at various times of the year.  It also involves understanding what impact knowing this information could have on travel plans.  These projects will be put on Google Slides which we will start looking at presenting in the latter part of next week.

In Religion we revisited what was started by previous teachers and discussed the prayer from St. Francis of Assissi, Canticle of Creation.

In French we looked at emotions and how we can use these in sentences to express how we feel.

In English Language Arts we started a Book Review on one of our favourite books.  We will be sharing these book reviews on this blog in the hopes of encouraging our friends and many others to read great books that we ourselves have read and liked.

In Health we talked about the importance of sleep and we started a sleep log where we are tracking how much we sleep every night and what we do before bedtime.  Our goal is to understand the impact our activities have on our sleep and the impact our sleep (or lack thereof) has on or daily activities too.

Finally, in Art we traced our hands and created works of art from the cutouts.  These not only express our creativity but also display some of the things we like. We made sure to infuse a bit of our French knowledge of numbers and months in there as well.
