Snap Circuits, Cleanup and Pie (I mean Pi) - March 12, 2020

This week we officially started our Grade 5 Science topic of Electricity and Magnetism.  To inspire us, we used snap circuits to get exposure to the terminology and look at all the things we can do with a closed circuit.  Here are some photos.
We also cleaned up the playground and field around our school, playing our part in being responsible citizens.
We have quite a few things on the go in the school too at this time.

We are currently collecting food for the St. Vincent de Paul organization that helps many around our great city.  If you have some non-perishable food items to spare, please send them in with your child.  We have a target of filling our box by next Tuesday and we will have an all-you-can eat snack day on Wednesday before the end of the week (i.e. students can eat any kind of snack, all day, any time; not just fruits and vegetables. :)) Thank you to those who already sent some items in.  True generosity shines during difficult times.
We have also started a Read-A-Thon.  Paperwork has been sent home on Wednesday regarding this.  Please sponsor your child or children and encourage others to do so as well.  This motivates students to read and they can track all reading times even time spent reading at school.  They may not track the time spent reading during lessons, unless it involved a period of reading. Should you have any questions about the Read-A-Thon, please do not hesitate to write.

Finally... we came full circle (haha) and learned about where Pi comes from and had our little competition of the most digits we can remember from Pi after 3.1415.

And... the winner was: JACOB with 28 digits!!!  BRAVO to all who memorized so many numbers.  Nice work Deonna for remembering 46 digits outside of 3.1415 :) Sometimes it is hard to perform under pressure.  Bravo also to our second places Kanya, Debora (24 each) and Kansola with 23.  Nice work everyone!  You have decimated my Hershey Kisses chocolate jar :).

Here's a quick video of where Pi comes from.

Please check in with your child regarding Progress Reports.  These have been sent home today.  The parent-teacher interviews booking system will open tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM.

Stay safe and healthy everyone!
